The Weekend Off

I’m on my “Let’s get rid of this baby weight diet” and up to now i’m doing well if i do say so myself. I’ve lost quite a few pounds now and my clothes are feeling distinctively bigger on me.

I’m sticking to my protein shakes during the day and reasonably low carb meal of an evening , the only thing i will admit to missing is snacks.  I do become quite hungry late afternoon and late on in the evening.

Previously the hubby and I would stuff our faces watching telly while we drank copious amounts of sugary coffee (well i did, the hubby goes without).  I could easily eat a huge slice of cake as well as a large bar of Dairy Nut to myself, then if i was staying up particularly late more biscuits or even a late night take away on a few occasions, the latter didn’t happen very often but it did happen.

The more i write about my diet, the more i see how i got as fat as i am.  I love food (obviously) and although i do love a lot of healthy food  such as veggies and salad, i also love all the wrong foods. Pasta, bread (oh i love you bread), cheese (oh i love you too cheese), cake, chocolate, chocolate biscuits, pizza, oat biscuits, Indian food and all the munchies that go with it.

While i do like a wide range of food i tend to stick to the same crap all the time.  I’ll have a huge plate of bolognaise and justify the cake and biccies afterwards because i had a massive pile of salad to go with it, not to mention the garlic bread the salad was wedged between.  I’m opening my own eyes the more i write, im literally shocked by myself.

Anyway enough of the being down on myself, i have literally done a u turn on my habits, except on Saturday night when i allow myself the evening off after being weighed at tea time.  Only then can i have whatever i want to eat and copious amounts of red wine to wash it down with if i feel like it.

Weigh In Day!!!!! That’s me 4th from the front with the “why did i eat that bastard Frey Bentos pie” look on her face.  (i dont like Frey Bentos pies by the way but you get what i’m saying).

But i must admit, as the weeks are going by i’m finding it more difficult to enjoy the fabulous tasting shite i used to eat, my body just can’t seem to take it, it literally goes into sheer panic.  Last Saturday evening for example i was weighed to find i’d lost a good 5 lbs so i decided a takeaway of tikka burger and chips and a few slices of pizza thrown in, along with some chocolate cookies, a hand full of popcorn and a bottle of red wine would be my treat of the day.  Over a few hours i ate and drank it all along with sugary coke, by the time id put the last piece of food into my mouth i literally couldn’t move.  That’s weird i used to easily be able to do this.

I was watching a film with my hubby and my eldest son (Trainspotting 2 for anyone interested and it was alright, not as good as the first), All i could do was lie back with my legs up on Anthony like a literal couch potato, King Eddie’s had nothing on me, i felt vile.  I was hot, beyond thirsty (more coke thanks) and my stomach was a huge ball that was uncomfortable to say the least.

5198855-mr-and-mrs-potato-head-620x350 Me, just not on a couch, i literally was Mrs Potato Head watching a film.

I went to bed about two hours after the film finished and the food had gone, i was still the same my body seemed to go into shock, i felt like if someone squeezed me i’d pop.  I lay in bed for a good hour or so just trying to get my greedy, overindulged body comfortable.  Throwing in a little panic attack, I think i fell asleep from exhaustion eventually,  i couldn’t help but wonder how i used to eat like that? on a regular basis, how do i have panic attacks from just being full? and i think it’s my body’s response to the wear and tear i’m putting on it, it’s telling me to stop, to look after it, it’s my body’s way of telling me that what i’m doing is wrong.

I got up the next day and instead of repeating my usual habit of “oh it’s Monday tomorrow i’ll start then”, i got straight back on it, bottle of water and a protein shake down the neck and i was right back on track, i also felt so much better in myself by doing so.  My day actually lifted, i felt in a better mood and my head and body felt a little clearer.

I will still have Saturday nights off, its something i need to do or i won’t stick to my plan throughout the week, and every diet i have ever done has involved me having a night off, it’s just now i will limit myself to a couple of treats instead of a whole weeks worth in one go. I need to remind myself that not everything fits in my mouth and my belly.

note to self!!!!

Sunshine Blogger Award

I am very proud to announce that I’ve been nominated for the Sunshine Blogger Award.  This was very unexpected as im a relative newbie, but I’ve certainly enjoyed writing my post and reading posts that other nominees have posted.

Firstly a huge shout out to Teeshares for my nomination, it was and is greatly appreciated, for anyone who hasn’t already checked out their blog on the link above, you won’t be disappointed i promise.

Secondly, as part of the nomination i have to answer 11 questions set for me, so here goes:

1.What made you start your blog

I have 6 children and i have quite a busy life, we have a happy home and share quite a lot of funny times and i always felt like i should be sharing those moments, even if it was just for myself to read back on as the kids got older.  I also loved the freedom of being able to write about literally anything i wanted, i had complete freedom and i loved it.

2.What’s your most favourite post you’ve written?

I thin my favourite post I’ve written has to be my Saturday Morning Chaos blog post. Its a recurring situation i find myself in a lot of the time, it literally is chaotic, i wrote the blog when i had not long had my most recent baby and was settling into mummy hood as a mummy of 6, which at first i did struggle with a tiny bit, the remainder of the day i’m writing about was in fact a good day, the chaos i wrote about disappeared as the day went on, and for me it sums our family up and gives me a warm little feeling in my tummy as how lucky i am to have this experience.

3.What are your top 3 hobbies?

First and foremost, writing, closely followed by drawing and lastly reading.  All of which i need to be left alone for so i do have to set out a time each day to be able to do this and keep my sanity ha ha.

4.If you were to name one person as your favourite person, who would they be AND WHY?

My favourite person is my husband Anthony.  I couldn’t say why but since the day we met I’ve never tired of his company.  He’s my go to person for literally EVERYTHING!!!!! We spent a period of time as friends and i think that built the foundation to our relationship, we do everything together.  From changing my dressing after our babies births to checking my piles (no i’m not joking) he does anything i ask him to.

Although the days of him writing me love notes and poetry just because he felt like it are no more, he can be incredibly romantic and thoughtful.  He knows me better than anybody and has seen every side to me possible, good and bad, and he’s never got up and ran away.

He took on my eldest 3 children as his own (i was married previously) and he’s never treated any of them differently to his own biological children and i will always be grateful for that.

There are many sides to Anthony and i’m lucky to say i’m the person who can say they’ve seen them all. He’s my best friend and we are both very passionate about each other, within minutes of our first ever conversation we both agreed we felt like we had known each other forever and hopefully we are one of the lucky ones and our “old school” relationship will forever remain like that.

5.What’s your favourite colour?

I have a few but i’d probably say clothing wise, black, black and more black with a splash of red for good measure.  For my home i would say grey, cream and any other pastel colours that take my fancy at the time.

6.If you were to eat one food item for the rest of your life, what would that be?

Buttered Toast, Thick white bread, would never tire of it.

7.Who did you look up to growing up, and why?

Marilyn Monroe (apart from the being dead bit), i thought she was beautiful, the mystery surrounding her death mesmerised me and still does to this day.  She lived in an era i would kill to go back in time to, she was so glamorous and literally lit up a room.  I just thought she was timeless and i loved that about her, my obsession grew and grew and even at 35 years old i’m still transfixed on her life story and the red lipstick!!!!.

8.What’s your biggest wish in life?

To have a long, happy, healthy life and watch my children, grandchildren and great grandchildren grow up into beautiful people with wonderful lives.

9. Do you believe in love at first sight?

Yes totally. I fell in love with my husband before i’d even met him (we spoke on the phone for 3 weeks before eventually meeting up) and i told him on our first date that i loved him and was going to marry him.  I wasn’t wrong!!!!!!

10. What are you most proud of in your life?

My children and the life I’ve built for them.

11.What’s been your favourite holiday destination so far?

Id say Florida, in my late teens my mum and dad took me there twice and the second time i was about to turn 18 and it was the last family holiday we had where it was just the three of us (i’m an only child).

So there are may questions answered, all that’s left to do now is nominate 11 fabulous blogs, which you will find below, click the links and have a good mooch, lets show them as much support as we can:

  1. tring tot spot
  2. Muma on the Edge

That’s it, simple as!!!! hope you all enjoy taking part, i’m really looking forward to all the replies.  Please feel free to comment, all comments are welcome (apart from nasty ones but i’m sure we won’t have any of those!!!!)

The let’s get rid of this baby weight Diet

Day 3 and all is well!!!! I’ve started a low carb high protein diet this week, i have been on a diet practically since my baby was born in January, well i say ive been on a diet, half a packet of chocolate digestives every day with sugary coffee unfortunately doesn’t count as your one a day, mores the pity.

My favourite oat biscuits

I’ve tried off and on to do the chicken and rice diet, slimming world and the starvation i cant feel my stomach because i just had a csection diet, none have worked but now I’ve changed my approach to dieting and I’ve done something I’ve never done before, researched.

I’ve literally googled myself out with diet tips and hacks to quick weight loss (there are none by the way).  But having a mooch through my blog one Saturday evening i came across endless articles on the clean eating/ caveman diet, although eating just meat is not for me, i have combined it to a diet that is fresh and new for me and pretty manageable.

Ordinarily i wouldn’t be looking for a quick fix diet and be trying to shred weight in as quick a time as possible but i am on a time limit unfortunately.  I have suffered with my gall bladder for a long time, in 2013 i was admitted to hospital for a week with gall stones and an infection in my gall bladder, the infection eventually spread to my liver and i was pretty poorly to say the least, pushing out a 8.5lb baby with no pain relief and an episiotomy sounded far more appealing than this week from hell in the worst hospital ward known to man.

8.5lb baby

Surgeons wouldn’t operate until the infection was clear and by the time that happened i was pregnant with my 4th baby Ruben so the op got postponed.  Over time things died down and my symptoms disappeared, i had two more consecutive pregnancies then a couple of months ago the dreaded pains started again, vomiting in the hood of my expensive coat in our car on the way to Wales for a day with kids, was not my finest hour.

The above mentioned expensive sicky coat before it was sickied in

The weeks that followed included a referral to see surgeons, having a scan to be told i had a rather “juicy” gallstone that turned out to be the size of 3/4 of my gallbladder, the surgeon was well impressed to say the least, he’d never in his entire career even heard of anyone having a gallstone that big and asked my permission to write a paper on it for student doctors lectures.

I felt a right dickhead, i know there are worst things to be embarrassed about but my rosy cheeks were a dead giveaway that i was mortified with myself, i thought it couldn’t get any worse until i was told i needed to be weighed!!!! oh my Christ!!!!! how heavy is that!!!! how did i get that big? having three babies one straight after the other that’s how. Oh and the above mentioned half pack of chocolate digestive biscuits a day, not to mention cheese on EVERYTHING, full fat fizzy drinks and being partial to the hubby’s baking skills, i was practically turning into a cross between a Victoria sponge and an oat biscuit by the second, the occasional drinky pooh’s with the hubby on a Saturday night didn’t make things any better either.

The Victoria Sponge, baby belly. Stretch marks I can cope with I’ve had 6 kids for god’s sake but this bad boy needs to be gone

I was told in no uncertain terms that the surgeon will not operate on me until i lose weight, right i thought, this is a good kick up the arse i need, how much weight are we talking?  3 stone! THREE STONE!?!?!? Apparently i may have to be cut open the old fashioned way to get my stones and gall bladder out, usually this is done with key hole surgery but due to its size my incision will be bigger, how did i let myself get into this bloody state, i was so ashamed and angry with myself.

So since then I’ve danced around with cutting back and flipping from diet to diet unable to cope with the pressure i would be great all day then give in of an evening so having lost half a stone in my first week i proceeded to maintain it then subsequently start to put it on, and more!!! once again the vicious circle had returned.

So this week after visiting my doctor for some moral support, I’ve put a plan into place that so far im quite happily sticking to.  I’m having zero carbs during the day but filling myself up on protein for breakfast and lunch, drinking 2 litres of water, having fruit for snacks and a small amount of carbs more protein and lots of veggies for my evening meal, i’m still allowing myself coffee minus the sugar and my milk has been replaced with Soya milk.

Not too bad in coffee cant taste the difference

I really do hope i can keep this up and im not denying myself what i want so once a week i’ll have an evening off once I’ve been weighed.  I’m peeing past myself with all the water but im noticing i feel a lot less bloated even just after a few days, i’m regimental with my eating times etc so i don’t have to go hungry and i’m actually satisfied with what im having.

I know i’ll hit a wall sooner or later but at the moment i’m focused, enjoying what i’m doing and taking things a day at a time.  I’ll be keeping you all up to date with how its going and also posting daily on my Instagram, make sure you follow me and any tips or encouragement will always be welcome.

Cherry DollFace Q&A, Inspirational women Series

Sitting at my computer one lazy afternoon I began trawling through the endless list of make up tutorials that appear online, as I usually did, the usual smoky eye tutorial or product review appeared. Nothing new there to say the least, until I found a new face that I’d never seen before.

Cherry dollface had a fabulous list of vintage hair and makeup tutorials, I sat and watched as many as I could before reaching for my make up kit and getting stuck in.

The videos were easy to understand, not boring, colourful, girly, different and even better the pin up in front of me was like myself, covered in tattoos, something you didn’t generally see at the time.

From then on I was hooked recreating as many looks as possible. Ive followed Cherry Dollface’s career ever since. In my opinion she is such an inspiration, and an excellent role model for girls of today, she is elegant, classy, and more importantly she is who she wants to be.
So after one small email and a quick response from the lady herself I sent over a few questions and eagerly awaited her reply. Hope you enjoy this Q&A with Cherry Dollface follow her videos yourself HERE and hopefully you will become a big fan as I did myself.

Purdeymakes6 xXx

1. For those who don’t already know, who are you? Profession, age, place of birth etc.

I started as a pinup model, but not I travel the world teaching vintage hair and makeup classes and organizing pinup photoshoots.

2. What first attracted you to the world of pin ups, modelling and make up tutorials?

I just liked how classic and timeless it all was. I was a little punk rocker so I thought the mix of styles was really cool. I started modeling by accident when photo was snapped at a car show and it ended up on the cover of a magazine. And I started making tutorials because people were always asking me how I did my styles!

3. Who is your biggest inspiration?

I am always inspired by the funny girls. The Lucille Balls and Carole Landis’ of the world.

4. You have a large collection of tattoos, which would you regards your favourite piece?

Probably my back piece. It is the largest and most detailed.

5. You obviously travel a lot with your work, is it hard to be away from your husband and family?

Of course! I am very independent so a little bit of space is always nice, but it does get hard when we spend months apart.

6. Where is your favourite place to be?

Italy or Scotland.

7. Did your Hero’s growing up still influence you now?

I am not sure I ever really had heroes growing up! I also ways looked to the strong women in my family as heroes. And yes, I still look up to them!

8. What advice would you give to any aspiring models or make up artists?

Look at it as a hobby and enjoy what you are doing! Very few people make money as makeup artists and no one is making a living off of being a pinup model, so just keep your expectations realistic. It is a super fun hobby though, so if you want to do it, than do it!

9. Did you have any official training in hair and make up or is it all self taught?

Self taught

10. What beauty products can you literally not live without?

Estee Lauder double wear foundation, Laura Mercier translucent powder, Schwing! Eyeliner by The Balm, and Bing lipstick by Smashbox.

11. For anyone just starting up, what would you recommend as a good staple piece for any vintage inspired or rockabilly outfit?

I have a whole video on top 10 rockabilly wardrobe essentials!

12. What are your aspirations for the future?

World domination! haha. I really have no idea. I just want to keep reaching babes all over the world and keep being happy doing what I am doing!

13. What’s to look forward to in 2017 for Cherry Doll Face?

More touring. Australia and New Zealand later this year. I am releasing a book at the endow the year too!

14. As a role model, what do you think is important, for coming across as someone to aspire to?

Just being true to myself. What I say and do isn’t always right, but the intentions are always there. I am never trying to be something I am not.

15. What’s your greatest strength and weakness?

Strength is my greatest strength! Hahah Seriously… I am pretty tough. And my weakness is over extending myself. Sometimes I push myself to exhaustion trying to be everything to everyone.

16. What picks you up if your down?

My husband, chocolate, working out.

17. If you could be stuck in a lift with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be?

I dont think I would want to be stuck in a list with anyone dead. I can imagine it would smell quite bad. I think I would probably pick my mom because I really miss her!

18. What’s your greatest achievement?

Being in my own at the age of 15 and getting into college and getting a degree.

19. What’s your guilty pleasure?

Bad reality TV and desserts!

20. What was the best phase in your life?

I think I am in it right now!

21. Who is that one person you can tell anything to?

My mom, my husband and my best friend. I guess I have 3!

22. What is your ideal weekend?

Relaxing!! Maybe going for a walk, eating a late breakfast, being lazy and cuddling with my husband.

23. What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done and would you do it again?

Booking a job for L’Oreal when I was in Italy on vacation and flying from Italy to New York and back again in 2 days. And yes!! I would definitely do it again.

24. Do you have any regrets in life?

Nope. No use regretting things you cant change.

25. If you could have one wish in life what would it be

To live a long and happy life surrounded by people that love me

Chocolate Guinness Cake

My favourite guilty pleasure is cake, any cake, as long as there is sponge and filling it’ll do me. While Victoria Sponge usually ranks number one my husband’s chocolate Guinness cake (stolen from Nigella)comes a close second.

I can’t bake, my baking talents extends to jam sponge squares. These consist of a basic of basic sponge cake baked in a square tin. Once it cools I slap jam on top and cut it into squares, even the kids are less than impressed but it is pretty tasty and hits a spot with a nice mug of coffee.

My husband was brought up with his dad baking for the family so he was taught from an early age, the only cookery lesson I’ve had was year 7 cookery class in school. No matter how hard I try baking it never turns out, I follow the recipe and it still turns into a disaster, my sponge squares are only a result of my father in law having some sympathy for me and explaining the basic of basic cake recipe I’m well known for. My cherry cake went down in family history not because of its taste but rather the fact all my Cherry’s sank to the bottom of the cake tin, it was edible what more could they ask!!!!!

Anyway as I was saying my husband has learnt from one of the great cake makers, so the whole baking situation comes very easy to him. He’s renowned for his cakes amongst our friends and his chocolate Guinness cake is his most asked for cake.

This cake is very rich and is an acquired taste. I personally didn’t like it at first the moistness of the cake put me off along with the actual cream cheese topping, but over time my palette changed and I now love it.

  • 250 millilitres guinness
  • 250 grams unsalted butter
  • 75 grams cocoa powder
  • 400 grams caster sugar
  • 142 millilitres sour cream
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 275 grams plain flour
  • 2½ teaspoons bicarbonate of soda

  • 300 grams cream cheese
  • 150 grams icing sugar
  • 125 millilitres double cream (or whipping cream)

  1. Preheat the oven to gas mark 4/180°C/350ºF, and butter and line a 23cm / 9 inch springform tin.
  2. Pour the Guinness into a large wide saucepan, add the butter – in spoons or slices – and heat until the butter’s melted, at which time you should whisk in the cocoa and sugar. Beat the sour cream with the eggs and vanilla and then pour into the brown, buttery, beery pan and finally whisk in the flour and bicarb.
  3. Pour the cake batter into the greased and lined tin and bake for 45 minutes to an hour. Leave to cool completely in the tin on a cooling rack, as it is quite a damp cake.
  4. When the cake’s cold, sit it on a flat platter or cake stand and get on with the icing. Lightly whip the cream cheese until smooth, sieve over the icing sugar and then beat them both together. Or do this in a processor, putting the unsieved icing sugar in first and blitz to remove lumps before adding the cheese.
  5. Add the cream and beat again until it makes a spreadable consistency. Ice the top of the black cake so that it resembles the frothy top of the famous pint.

What’s in my bag?

A handbag has always been a staple of most women’s wardrobe, it’s that one item that will not only finish an outfit but also serves a purpose.

Whether that purpose is to contain your make up, a change of clothes, receipts, sweet wrappers or a set of nappies, either way it’s something that very few ladies leave the house without.

My bag currently is that of a baby bag for my baby daughter, but it’s my bag nevertheless.  I love organising my bag, the excitement I get from getting a new bag is rarely for the bag itself it’s the fact I can contain my life’s important bits into one small space and neatly keep everything of purpose to me close to hand.

I say neatly, my bag remains very neat until 1. A big day out with the kids or 2. My 20 month old daughter, who has an obsession with the contents of anyone’s bag, has been mooching and very successfully broken into the said bag and pretty much obliterated it in the 30 seconds it took me to realise what she was, very quietly, doing hiding behind the couch.

Like I said a big day out with the kids can also cause catastrophic results in my bag. Empty wrappers that the kids very kindly threw at me, tickets for theme parks, leaflets I’ve used to keep the boys quiet in the back of the car, usually involving a train of some sort, small toys, once again usually a train or car, soft dolls, Barbie shoes, bobbles, baby wipes, nappies, bum creams, an odd earing (don’t even know where that came from or if it’s even mine, highly likely it is mine and has spent so long in my bag that I don’t even remember owning them).  For some unexplained reason I always find small change and random pieces of make up and a perfume bottle lid, again don’t know why they are there or how the lid escaped from the perfume bottle or how in fact my Clinique eye shadows grew legs and walked away from the rest of the contents of my make up bag, but they have.

I hate my bag being in this sort of state but it’s something that just happens as a busy mum on the go. I like to think that if I ever, god forbid had my bag stolen, that the thief would take one look at the inside of it and actually hand me it back “you’re alright love keep it, I don’t need your money that badly”.

Maybe my messy bag is something I can’t help, it’s inevitable that until my kids grown up it will always be a bit of a shit tip, but as well maybe it’s a sign of the busy life I have as well as a small trail of memories that we have collected as a family, it’s a unique product that is unique to me as a person as well as my life, so while my bag starts as a beautiful, tidy and pristine item it’s destined to end full of collectibles and happy treasures we’ve collected along the way.

Slimming World Vegetarian Spaghetti Bolognaise

*Quorn or mince if having a meat      alternative

*tomato puree 4 tbsp

*tinned tomatoes 400g can

*passata 500g carton

*1 onion

*1 large carrot

*3 celery sticks

*4cloves of garlic

*1tsp dried mixed herbs

This is a very low maintenance easy family meal. I cook it in the slow cooker and leave to boil all afternoon. I also throw in a cup full of stock to keep the sauce runny and if need be I add a touch more tomato puree to thicken it up. If I have spare veggies such as mushrooms or peppers in the fridge they get thrown in as well.

Once it’s near tea time I boil whatever veggies I fancy, brocolli being my favourite and throw a huge pan of pasta on to make sure the whole family is full. I also season my food once it is ready to be plated up so season to your own tastes.

This is a very cheap meal to make and is a good time saver as well. If your family are like ours they will all want different meals and not only is it time consuming but over a weekly period can add a lot to your shopping bill. The price of this meal will vary from shop to shop but should always come in less than £5, so for someone like myself with six children that’s very cheap.
